Tose who are in position of making policy made a determination that ulcer
protection aforded from bracing was not medically necessary. We provided
pages of documentation arguing against this policy determination but (to
date) to no avail. We have requested a new and what we consider a more
appropriate L Code be provided for the PRAFO. After years of attempts
(another still in progress) we have failed in getting one. You practitioners
out there who appreciate the value of this type of bracing could be of help
by continually voicing, writing and supporting your opinions on this subject.
Also keep in mind that if the managing physician, you as the orthotist and
the patient and or family agree that it is in the best interest of the
patient to provide this type of orthosis then follow the legal steps and bill
a responsible party who might be willing to invest a little to possibly save
an extremity.
