Is 6.8 cents per mile appropriate for milage?

Certainly I know this question seems ludicrous but this is the position I am
in currently. The small company I work with ( 14 employees) sees it necessary
to only pay for the fuel used to make trips to sites away from the lab to see
patients: at their home, at the hospitals and in doctor offices. This is not
only in the town of the lab site but also to other towns twoand three hours
away. I contracted with this company with the agreement that the company
would pay milage for travel incurred for the benefit of the company.
Imagine my surprise when they said they would only pay for the fuel used and
not the usual rate of what is now 32 cents per mile. They said as a small
company they were not required to pay the rate recognized by the IRS. Yes, I
know how to document this against taxes and recoup some in that manner. In
two years, I have logged 55,000 miles on two vehicles, burned out one air
compressor, one rear axle, and as I write this my auto is in is a
transmission service shop for what will probably be a torque converter held
together mostly by prayer for the last little while. I have also had to rent
autos for a few days each time to continue to complete my commitments for
patient contacts. The company owners felt no obligation to share any of this
expense but my auto has been quickly put out of use because of the excess
miles I have racked up for this company. Am I incorrect in thinking that the
company should bear the full cost of business transportation? I am only a
salaried employee and recieve no benefits other than medical. Could I please
get responses from colleagues as well as business owners? I have been
mentored by the best and the brightest in our industry and those who know me
will remember me as loyal and honorable in my actions.

Respectfully requested,
