You pose an interesting question, and one that I myself struggle with every
year when ABC certification dues are due. I am a former Ohio practitioner
who left 4 yrs. ago and now reside in the great state of Texas. Texas went
to licensure in 1998, and after the grandfather period require a license
exam. To sit for the exam the required education mirrors the education
requirement for the ABC exam, but you need not be certified by ABC or BOC to
sit for the license exam. As a young practitioner ( 10 years ago) it was a
goal to become ABC certified as I believed then that was a high level
achievement and you could take pride in attaining that goal. Over the years
and through experience I found that if I had a belief that ABC assured
quality practitioners, that I was wrong. Ron Kidd stated that without
licensure that any yahoo can practice O&P. Well, I've come across my share
and many have the ABC credential, and I now hope licensure will sort out the
yahoos.
I will take it upon myself to be critical and state that perhaps I
misunderstood the purpose of the ABC, and I'm not deriding those that are
involved with, support, or are very good practitioners w/ the ABC
credential.
It seems to me that ABC had the responsibility to determine who has what it
takes and who doesn't. I guess licensure will, or we hope it will do that.
For those who will respond get involved I recently have, as an examiner
for the ABC exam. I want to add that this is my first exposure to the exam (
besides taking it) and I am very impressed by the people running it, and
their dedication to it, and the purpose it stands for. Maybe for me the
pendulum is swinging the other way. Steve Baxter, CO, LO
