INITIAL REQUEST: What other routers are available other than the
Trautman? I am concerned with cost and need a variable speed. Quality
and frequency of repairs are secondary concerns.
I use a Dayton router available from Cascade. It has variable speed.
Can't
compare it to anything as I've been using it for about 18 years. I have
had
to rebuild the motor in that time and recently had to replace the control
box. This work was done by my local electrician.
Check out Friddles Router. It is abt $800 less and very nicely built. I
have
a Troutman, Cascade, Friddle and king of the hill Bock Router. The Bock
cost $7,000, but is an outstanding machine.
Call Pedro Llanes, CP. He makes a great troutman. (305) 250-9900 He
also makes the La Table and a good vacumm system.
I have two troutmans and a Cascade Variable speed D-C motor, we love the
Cascade.
I purchased a variable speed router from Friddle Orthopedic about 2 years
ago. I had a slight problem with vibration, and Frankie Friddle sent me
an
entire new shaft assembly without any charge. You'll find the cost
considerably less than others on the market.
Try Friddles. We have a Trautman and a Friddles. Both have there strong
points. Friddles is variable speed and a little less expense.
I have found that a Craftsman variable speed hand drill clamped into my
vice works great! It's very cost effective. Of course, I always wrap
some
paper towels around the body of the drill so as not to scratch it. Be
sure
to get the metal rather than plastic body to avoid crushing it when you
tighten the jaws of that vice. It will just make you sick to hear that
cr-cr-cracking sound as you're cranking the handle of the vice in a
clockwise
direction. What's really nice though is that you have the option of
changing
the angle and position to wherever you want it. It's practically
universal.
Another feature that you may want to add to enhance this system is to
duct
tape a flashlight (also available at Sears) to the drill so that you can
actually see what it is you are trying to grind, sand, rout, polish or
buff.
If you buy rechargeable batteries, this will last indefinitely. This
managed
care system is portable, quiet, very inexpensive and also endorsed by
BOC.
Hope this helps.
A Friend Who Got Up Too Early This Morning
I have four carvers from GS Machine in WPBch. Florida. They are much
less expensive and work well (no problems yet). Ask for George
Cascade has a router called the Proline Floor Model Router.
I bought it approx. 4 years ago and have had zero complaints about it.
It has a variable speed dial rangeing from 1-10(too slow - too fast!)
and also a foot pedal. The pedal must be stepped on for the router to
work.
This is a good safety feature
if cost is a concern, which it was for me, i just took a standard $35.00
grinder motor and had a shaft (with the necessary threaded end) attached
to
it from a machine shop for another $20.00 and it has worked fine for me
now
for five plus years. as far as varible speed i have found that a
feathering
touch by skilled hands will give the same results.
OttBock has a variety of routers and milling machines to choose from.
We offer a low cost single speed ($1425) or two speed ($1495) router,
called the Rout-Rite Carver, at Knit-Rite. These were introduced over
three
years ago and customers report they are happy with the product and there
have
been no complaints. They are on page 555 of the current catalog.
