Dear Colleagues:

This is to thank all and each one of you who took the time and effort to
write me, trying to help me in building what should be a new kind of
prosthesis for me.

If I say “it should be” is because, after all, I am not going to build that
prosthesis; some clever Spanish guy succeeded in having the hospital “give”
him the prosthesis;

Anyhow, although sad, I want to post the responses here; who knows that
Spanish guy needs the same information…

your best bet is to talk to any governing bodies within the sports that he's
involved in to get direct input for what they want. i know that with boxing
they will want a foam cover to protect the opponent.

Dear Carlos,

I do not have experience making a prosthesis for a person in Judo, but I am
a
prosthetist who trains in karate.

The first thing to understand is in the martial arts the feet need good foot
contact on the ground at all times while simultaneously one needs power.
Also, torsion is always needed. I am that a College Park TruStep foot would
give good foot contact in several stances and with the changeable bumpers
your client can try out a variety of combinations. A torque absorber in an
endoskeletal design may also be warranted.

Secondly, this prosthesis needs to stay on. A silicone pin with additional
silicone suspension sleeve would probably work well.

Third, this endo should have a cover, not so much for cosmesis but for
safety
of your clients opponents. The cover can be of anything, but keep in mind
it will under go a great deal of stress.

Most importantly, talk a great deal with your client regarding expectations.
He will have to adjust to the limitation of a prosthesis, but if he is a
true
martial artists he will succeed.

Best Wishes and God bless,

…………

I have and am working with a man who is a professional kickboxer, and
no-holds-barred fighter. I have also worked with the man who we believe to
be the first below-knee amputee to complete a marathon. So I have a little
experience with these men that might be of some help to you and your
patient. It would be best to discuss this over the phone rather than
attempt to cover such an in-depth matter via email. My phone number at my
Clinic is 5170349-5519, and at home 517-339-6115.

…………..

Dear Carlos, Read UR mail on O&P List,I am also a LBK and a designer of my
own limb, when the various qualified had advised me there is no remedy to my
restricted mobility due to deformed stump, but udergo corrective surgery,
being innovative in my Consumer Electronic Servive field, I designed/aligned
and self using $ past five years,Prosthetic hardware like articulating foot,
that irrespective of price is still not available anywhere, But have desire
that these devices be recognized by Int.Non profit org/institution for the
benefit of mass amputees seeking comfort from illfitted prosthesis I will
be glad to know your location as I am from a developing country INDIA, where
there is no word like to be recognised understood.. Best Regards Mr.

A very good suspension device for quick motions of the prosthesis is a
activesleeve. This will allow kicks with no pistoning and the best secure
feeling because the suspension is not just from the distal end as in pin
systems. I am aware one case where a DAS MARS ANKLE UNIT was used to
allow more bending of the ankle and rotation assistance. I hope this is
of
help.
Contact
Bill Copeland cp. at Copeland prosthetics in Tampa FL I am certain
he can be some help

Dear Carlos,

I'm a prosthetist and an AK. I also have a brown belt in Jujitsu.
Suspension and protection are the keys here. The prosthesis must stay on
him while he is engaged in those activities. It would be nice if his knee
ROM was not inhibited as well. The protection is primarily for his training
partners. Also, a round foot like the one that the Ferrier Coupler people
make might be useful. Best wishes.

Hello Carlos,

Contact Michael Quigley, CPO at Oakbrook Orthopedic Services, phone number
(708) 620-5333. He fitted a bk amputee cruiser weight professional boxer
by the name of Craig Bodzianowski about 15 years ago. He returned to
professional boxing and his performance was quite amazing. I'm not sure of
the fitting criteria and components used. I made a leg for a guy that does
judo and made him a corset and joint to help
keep it on well.. Now i would use 3s plus corset and joint perhaps....let me
know what you come up with.

THANKS, CRAIG SVADER
