Hi!
My name is Amy Fetz. I was born with an upper limb deficiency, below the
elbow. From birth-16 I was a patient at Doernbeckers Childrens Hospital in
Portland, OR where I received 'hook' prostheses. From ages 16-21, a patient
of Shriners Childrens Hospital also of Portland. At Shriner's I received my
first myo-electric prosthesis, which did wonders in terms of capability,
comfort and best of all~my self-esteem.
Now I am 27, a fulltime college student and employee at a
preschool/kindergarten. Since the age of 21, I have not had my prosthesis
serviced or repaired. Now, the socket is cracking, the casting has sunken on
the underside, the mechanics are not functioning and the sleeve is tearing.
Because it is 6 years old, I was advised by a prosthetician to replace it,
if financially possible. My dilemna is~I do not have any medical insurance
nor the financial means to do this. I am in the lengthy process of filing
for Medicaid/SSDI benefits and insurance.
Do you know of anyone (individual or organization) that would be
interested in assisting me to purchase a new myo-electric prosthesis?
Doctors~do you have any encouraging advice from past experiences with
patients in my predicament?
I appreciate any information you can give me! It means a lot!
Thank you~
Amy Fetz
