Hi Listservers
I have two children one 13(male), the other 8 years old (female), both
whom have moderate degrees of intoeing-Bilateral (10-15º). Both children
have no other reported medical conditions, i.e. Cerebral Palsy, CDH. On
assessment both have normal amounts of tibial torsion and display around
10º less available external rotation than internal. On walking there is
noticeable intoeing of around 10-15º. There are reports of tripping and
visible scuff marks on the inside borders of their footwear from the
contra lateral shoe.
Both children have parents who are concerned more than anything about
the appearance and are getting comments about their child's gait pattern
from other observers. The young boy is particularly awkward and is a
keen footballer/sportsperson. I have instructed both to do stretches for
the adductors/internal rotators and advised against the classic W
sitting television posture with legs flexed and splayed to the outside
of the body for the young girl.
I have found limited literature on the clinical results or outcomes of
using Gait plates (not much around). I have also searched the internet
and found a reasonable amount of discussion, again without much
consensus on their effectiveness. I have also found enough information
on manufacturing them from a cast.
My question is, Have you have any experience in using these, if so with
any success?. Are they worth trying?
I look forward to your opinions/results, Thank you.
