CALL FOR PAPERS ON MOBILITY ASSISTS AND PERSONAL VEHICLE USE BY PERSONS
WITH DISABILITIES
81st Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board
January 13-17, 2002
Washington, DC
Sessions related to personal mobility are being sponsored
Committee on Accessible Transportation and Mobility (A1EO9)
Committee on New Transportation Systems and Technology (A1E14)
The Committees invite papers for presentation at the 2002 TRB Annual Meeting
which describe research in accessible transportation related issues. We
are particularly interested in current research regarding the use of
personal vehicles by persons with disabilities, both as the driver and as a
passenger. The contributions that technology has made to advancements in
this area is of prime interest. Many persons with disabilities prefer to
travel using a personal vehicle for various reasons, including convenience,
independence, flexibility, comfort, safety and dignity. Documentation is
sought on research, or practical methods and approaches, regarding the use
of personal or private vehicle by travellers with disabilities to
participate in community activities. Specific topics might include:
1. The extent and quantification of the use of personal vehicles by both
drivers and passengers with disabilities.
2. The affordability of such vehicles by persons with disabilities:
government/agency/private sector programs that provide financial assistance
towards the vehicle purchase and/or modification.
3. Current and emerging adaptive driving products/aids (i.e. manual hand
controls, joystick driving, voice activated electronic controls, left foot
accelerators, etc.).
4. Specially equipped vehicles produced by both original equipment and
second stage manufacturers:
vehicles where the driver's seat is a person's wheelchair/mobility device.
5. Advances in motorized wheelchair design and control that may have
implications for the transportation environment outside the home or
workplace (e.g. docking, stair ascent) such as automatic control or
sensor-based control, or stand-up wheelchairs.
6. Advances in occupant restraint.
7. The use of non-licensed vehicles, like golf carts and all-terrain
vehicles, by persons with disabilities.
8. Driver assessment, evaluation and rehabilitation.
9. Parking programs (i.e., exemptions to community traffic bylaws) for
persons with disabilities.
