The Barr Foundation has completed, on April 20, 2001, a pilot program which provided 11 Honduran amputees with free prosthetic rehabilitation. We appreciate the dedication of Eddy Fuentes, CPO and the Barr Foundation's Central and South American Project Coordinator, his brother Julio Fuentes a prosthetist from Guatemala, and the San Felipe O&P Clinic staff in the successful coordination and completion of this project.
The Barr Foundation looks forward to expanding this into an yet another program with the Rotary Club Of Tegucigalpa for above knee and other upper extremity amputees.
This would not of been possible without the generosity of USA manufacture donors, Foresee Orthotics and Prosthetics, Cascade Orthopedic Supply, Springlite, Fillauer, Inc., USMC and other Where Hope Meets Help Donor Members listed on the below link to our web. Their donation of the components and supplies were crucial to its success.
Please see a photo of the happy recipients, O&P staff, San Felipe Hospital administration and representatives of the Barr Foundation at the press event coordinated for us.
The photo(s) at www.oandp.com/barr is for the world to see that countries can work successfully together in making people whole again. It will be published in several US publications to encourage further donations for a sustainable program.
The OANDP-Listserve was very effective in recruiting professional volunteers to oversee the project and the soliciting of the required components and supplies..
We look forward to coordinating other efforts in Honduras and other regions of Central and South America.
The Barr Foundation has completed successful projects in Mexico, Belize, Guyana, Honduras, Philippines, Sierra Leone, and Nicaragua as well as for over 500 amputees in 38 states of the USA whom otherwise could not afford prosthetic rehabilitation.
