Hi All
The following is by Beverly Cusick, for Physiatrist, Physical Therapists,
and Orthotists. The ideas of serial casting have helped us in our practice
tremendously. Being able to assess a patient foot and ankle deformities with
a PT, improves creditability, communication, and repro with the rehab team.
A must if the above items are important to you or your practice.
That's all for now
John Russell
Preparing the joints and tissues for comfortable and functional use of an
optimum orthosis is
certainly within the practicing domain of the knowledgeable orthotist. This
information could
help you to fully understand and successfully address foot and ankle
deformity management
problems where most AFOs fail.
A New Monograph/Video Set by Beverly Cusick, PT, MS has
become available to all clinicians who work with foot deformities
of soft-tissue origin.
Lower Extremity Deformity Management for Children and Adults:
Serial Casting to Restore Soft-Tissue Extensibility at the Ankle and Foot
This 70-page monograph provides rehab clinicians with the fundamentals of
below-knee serial casting.
It includes:
* Discussions of normal and pathological muscle physiology
* Properties of soft tissue extensibility and the clinical relevance of the
length-tension relationship
* Guidelines and techniques for gaining reliability in assessing ankle ROM
* Reasons that serial casting might not succeed.
* Casting indications, precautions, limitations, and contraindications
* Posting principles for optimum in-cast gait training and function
* An extensive, partially-annotated, and current reference list that is
sorted by topic.
The monograph is accompanied by a 60-minute, how-to videotape, entitled:
Cast Fabrication Techniques #1: The Flexcast Preparatory AFO(c)
John Russell, CP, developed this casting technique for early recovery of
soft tissue extensibility
following a traumatic brain injury or stroke. It has been used successfully
for children with cerebral palsy as well.
With 9-year-old Reiny, Ms. Cusick reviews the materials needed for the
Flexcast, and demonstrates
DFROM assessment noting R1/ R2, cast fabrication and posting of any cast for
optimum in-cast standing
and gait function.
