Dear List members

here is the summary of responses I received. thank you for all who
responded to my question:

Dear List members

I would highly appreciate if you could kindly write to me your experience
about using silicon suspension LINER( with pin) system,or Alpha liner
suspension system, for amputees in HOT CLIMATE (where day temperature
ranges from 35--40 oC).

Does it cause excessive sweating and/ or unbearable heat?

Thanking you in advance.

RESPONSES

Dear Sir,
living in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil brings a special difficulty with hot
wheather and high temperatures. We do have a lot of amputees that complain
about the silicone liner heat and some about excessive sweating. But despite
of that I have never had a patient that has dropped the silicone liner
option for that reasons , due to the incredible superior suspension and
confort .

In Kansas we have temperatures above 100 for 21 days in a row last summer,
not sure of the C equivalent. Have several people who use Alpha and Iceross
liners, some need to dry their skin repeatedly throughout the day. Others
use Drysol, a prescription Rx. Alps now distributes a similar formula with a
high concentration of aluminum chlorhydrate. Bottom line people still sweat,
some more some less especially when its hot.

Most of them related an increase in sweating just in the first weeks, after
twomonths generally they get well with the liner.
Some physicians indicated a solutions of alcoholl with iodo(iodated
alcohol) just to strenght the skin condition that becomes very thin due to
the excessive sweating.
None of them has ever told me about using dryers creams , powder or
medicins.Once one of them told me it doesn`t work well for long periods of
use.
Sincerely,

Mario

Well I am amputee-BK using silicon socket with pin(screwed on head-on
Endolite System) and quite comfortable after initial sweaty period of 2
months.
For more comfort I use cotton thin swab on front portion
which absorbs any beraable sweat if there is.

I stay in India,Gujarat where in summer it reaches to 48
sometime but I manage in that climate too.

Regards,

Sejal

Ajaz,
I am a prosthetist in southern part of USA. It gets around 40 Celsius here
but not often or for long periods, 35 is common in the summer months. I have

found the silicone liners, alphas and others to be a problem with an
estimated 10% to 20% of those I have fitted. My experience has been less
problems with perspiration with the silicone liners than with Alpha or the
urethane liners. If it is hot and there is physical activity some problems
are probably inevitable no matter what kind of system is used. Hygiene is
crucial with all of these type liners. If it is hotter the percentage of
individuals experiencing problems will, of course, likely increase. I've
recently had good luck with the Dermo from Iceross. I have found that it is
best to leave the liners as long as possible and have seen less irritation
and dermatitis around the proximal edge with this liner.
Good Luck,
Eddie White, CP
