Well I am going to take you up on your offer to post this question to the
P&O world at large!!

I have a 55 yr. old man who was injured 5-6 years ago to an electrical
accident. He was a lineman and was hit with a tremendous surge of
electricity...it blew off most of his foot and the doctors tried to save the
rest for 3 years or so. Finally a decision was made to amputate to a BK. He
was slow to heal [though not a diabetic]. Once healed we started his
prosthesis. He would do fine for a while then he would break out in a
rash/sometimes bordering on hives. We were constantly sending him to
dermatology and they were puzzled as well....we tried changing socks,
inserts, suspensions, everything. I used cotton, wool, blends, gels, nylons
and every type of sock did the same thing eventually. I have tried
suspension sleeves, pins, PTS designs, cuff and waist belt, etc. and still
he breaks out in this rash...sometimes severely, and over the whole residual
limb, and sometimes just in spots. Sometimes it itches and not at other
times. I have ground up the socket material and made a paste which he wore
and there was no reaction...I sent pieces of everything else we had used and
the allergist couldn't find anything that he was allergic to. I have also
tried flexible liners and a cut out frame for his socket...no different.
When he's able to walk, he walks beautifully. He's a very active man who
loves to garden and hunt. The dermatologist finally said that perhaps the
electrical surge that went through his body had compromised his skin to the
point that he would not be able to use a prosthesis. To my patient and
myself, this didn't seem like such a good diagnosis. What he does now, is
wear it until is breaks out, leaves it off a day or so, lets it clear up and
then goes on with life. But this is getting old. I have now started to
explore some of the things we did years ago.....leather inserts, possibly a
wooden socket. Still there's the issue of socks.

So there you go. That's my dilemma. Has anyone else come up against this
before? If so, what was tried that worked??
I'd appreciate any help or suggestions sent my way. This is a wonderful
gentleman that had so much to do and is limited by this situation.

Thanks Joan. I'll look forward to hearing from folks out there.

Mary Grant, C.P.
