Dear List,
I am shocked to find out that PT’s and OT’s are now
qualified provider to provide Prosthetic and Orthotic
services, I would think they need at least some
qualification in O&P.
I feel that somebody has sold me out without my
knowledge, I became aware of this issue only when I
saw it on the list server, and I do read most of the
publication on O & P either I missed it or It was
never there. I don’t know what is going to happen to
this field, in order to provide quality service we
wanted some kind of regulation, this seems to me that
we have opened huge door for PT’s and OT’s.
If initial intention of AOPA was to stop reimbursement
to non qualified provider than I don’t understand how
this will limit reimbursement? infect this will
increase use of certain codes tremendously.
This is not a huge victory for ABC or BOC qualified
practitioner, this is victory for PT and OT
organizations, they have accomplished something huge
in a year what AOPA, AAOP and ABC was trying to
accomplish for ages…with the stroke of a pen. I don’t
know any of you out there feel this way but as reality
is sinking in, I am finding myself upset with this
situation. If this was the sacrifice AOPA had to make
than it is a big one, and there is no telling where it
will end this is just a beginning. PT organization
will never allow any of us to gait train patient with
or without qualification. I am waiting for new
Almanac to read about this issue and why we had make
such a big concession?
I am not upset that PT’s and OT’s are qualified to
provide Prosthetic and Orthotic services (because
anybody was able to bill for this services before),
what I am upset about is that they don’t need any
qualification at all in O&P………I agree that we have
reduced amount of providers who can bill for P&O
services, but is it (this legislation) going to truly
achieve its purpose?………only time will tell.
I truly hope that upcoming rule making session with
HCFA results in to some positive outcomes. Please
forgive me for my grammar mistakes while reading this
message. Thanks.
