I have been given the task of computing the cost of keeping a person in a
prosthesis for the rest of his life as part of an insurance settlement.
The real problem is an estimate of how often the prosthesis or its
components will need replacment. He is now an otherwise healthy, active
18 year AK. This has nothing to do with what kind of prosthesis he will
ultimately receive (if any) since this is for litigation purposes at this
time. The client's attorney knows our firm and asked us for this
estimate. (If he ultimately wants a prosthesis, I will probably be the
provider.)

The client lives in an environment where service is fairly well
available. I also expect that sockets will be replaces several times in
the first few years. I realize that there are many variables depending on
the kind of socket, foot, knee, etc, but I have to work in generalities.
I am offering the assumption that he will use hydrualics, titanium
components and a flexible, suction socket, and that the technology will
remain static.

How long do you all think an endo or an exo should last for an 18 year
old male and how would you expect the life expectancy of the device to
increase as he ages and becomes relatively more sedentary? Lots of
assumptions, I know, but actuaries are like that.

Thanks for the help in advance.
