I am hoping you will share your thoughts with me regarding what L-codes you
might consider for a new osteoarthritic knee brace. The knee brace is
unilateral, carbon composite, with 4-axis joint and removable
lining/padding. Varus-valgus positioning is achieved by “tilting”
individually the thigh cuff and tibia cuff to open the compartment. What
makes this a little challenging regarding the coding is: It is sold as a
modular system, with THREE separate components: Thigh Cuff, Calf Cuff,
Four-Axis Joint. This makes it possible to use a large thigh cuff and a
small tibia cuff. There does not seem to be any appropriate numbers for a
modular custom fitted knee orthosis. The joint has a triple layer
contruction and the uprights are fabricated from a high tech aluminum alloy
for strength and durability. L2755 is for carbon graphite, is there a
different number for other new extra strong materials? The only single
upright rigid custom fitted single upright knee orthosis I find is L1843.
But, since this new brace is an OA brace, it does not offer “rotation
control” as included in the Illustrated Guide description for L1843. Also,
it does not have “adjustable flexion/extension joint” but placement of the
4-axis does provide an automatic ‘soft’ extension stop at 170 degrees. I
know I can submit to AOPA Coding Committee and SADMERC, but am trying to get
a “general idea” in a shorter time frame than it usually takes them to
respond. Please respond directly to me - I will post an offer for a summary
of responses.
