Hi! All
I was presented with a rather interesting case by a physio yesterday. She
has a 21yr old white male with a condition diagnosed as Spinocerebello
degeneration(sp?), or more specifically - ?Friedrich's Ataxia.
Thr problem is a severe shortning of the muscles & ligaments, specifically
in the lower limbs. The biggest problem at this stage is balance when
walking. When walking his forefoot generally strikes the ground first,
specifically when walking up a gradient.
When looking at his feet, he presents with a Pes Cavus foot, but with a
little massage, the medial arch stretches out to almost normal.
The question I have is, what sort of orthotics will be neccessary to
maintain his tone in his muscles? Will a night splint work in combination
with a foot orthosis in a sturdy shoe? What is the best way to measure an
orthosis for his foot? Can anyone tell me more about this condition or at
least point me to an appropiate web-site?
Thanks in advance for your advice & input.
Regards
Sean Thorncroft (M.O.P.)
