Hello everyone and thanks to those who responded. I'll use this post to
try to answer all the questions I received regarding this matter. The
family of the deceased contacted my office and informed my staff of this
funeral home's policy after the funeral had taken place. They called
because they wanted to donate his prostheses just as he had previously
done with all of his older prostheses. This individual was well aware
that some of the components could still be used for those less fortunate.
However, he desired to be buried with his most recent prostheses, and I
STRONGLY believe his wishes should have been honored. To date, I have not
met with any of the family members, so my knowledge is second hand. I
have known this family for more than twelve years, and I seriously doubt
they would pursue legal action. I simply felt this was a topic for
discussion, and I hoped to receive differing viewpoints. One of the
reasons this list exists is to promote discussion on various topics
related to O & P. I have received numerous responses with widely
differing opinions. As a result, I feel I have a better understanding.
