The below statistical sources were provided today thanks to a variety of
subscribers and has shed more light on the stats of 1.5 million US amputees
and growing by 427 per day: Normal level?Certainly not if youhappen to be
one of them!

Divison of Health Care
National Hospital Discharge Survey
National Limb Loss Information Center 1-888-267-5669 ext 811
<Email Address Redacted> administered by ACA and
partially
funded by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) federal grant
1990 US Census Bureau
1992 Digest of Data on Persons with Disabilities,US Department of Education
Vital Health and Statistics National Health Survey 1996 administered CDC
Limbs for Life Foundation Every week 2,996 people lose a limb.

You may also check the statistical information and reference sources
available via the prospectus
of the public stock offering of the Hanger organization.

More than 54 million or 15%-25% of the U.S. population experience some
limitations in their activities as the result of an impairment or health
condition. Between 1983 and 1994 the rate of disabling conditions increased
by 19.4% conditions per thousand population, all ages, both genders combined
. CDC -Lisa Sinclair at 770-488-7667

While vascular disease is the cause of most amputations in this country, you
may also be surprised to learn that landmines are a leading cause of limb
loss in developing countries.
Every 20 minutes there is a victim of a land mine explosion, mostly innocent
men,women and children.

Dear Tony Barr, List members,

The estimates quoted by the Barr foundation regarding amputee statistics
in the USA comes to me as a surprise.
Can someone shed some light on this Current Research mentioned and the
direct source of the USA statistics????? (I could not find it on the
 websites mentioned)

A correct figure could be a useful indicator to see if the amputee numbers
in a given country and the related national-prosthetic-provision-capacity
has reached a normal level. (If we consider the USA normal.)
