In response to Ms. Steele's on attempting to have a mid career change, I
would advise to all that for every case that resonates to Ms. Steele's,
there are many others that have been successful. And I might add that they
are not necessarily technicians or uncertified people with 15 years of O&P
experience. One should realize when making any change (drastic or not) to
their career, that repercussions in all aspects will be felt, especially in
the financial department. I recently had an intern from P-school work with
me for about 6 months while finishing the program. Initially he informed
me that he entered the field so that he could get his components for cost
and handle his own prosthetic needs. He suffered a BK amputation 1 year
prior to making this mid career change. He later realized that he had an
affinity for the field and working with those in need. He has successfully
transitioned into a promising career and is completing his
residency....maybe not at the location that is most convenient or
lucrative, but nevertheless satisfying the necessary requirements
preparatory in taking the boards. This is an enduring process, one that
many have undergone and successfully transitioned into, whatever the
situation.
