Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Prasantha Fernando, living in Staten Island, New
York.I am 24 years old.I met with a train accident on
February 10,1999 when I was in Sri Lanka and had to
have my left lower limb amputated above the knee.At
that time I was majoring in biology as a undergraduate
student of the University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka.
Since there are a lot of field works in biology which
require excessive walking I changed my major to
Computer science and came to U.S.A on July10,2000. I
am
currently studying in computer science as an
undergraduate student at the college of Staten
Island,New York.
Since I am a student and currently not employed, it is
difficult to afford a new prosthetic. My parents living
in Sri Lanka also can not afford the cost of a new
prosthetics since they are not in a good financial
state.
Presently I walk with a prosthetic which was given
by a non-profit organization in Sri Lanka.The limb I
am using now is not in good condition since it had
been used by one of the patients in England and had
been donated to that Sri Lankan Institute. I have been
using this this limb for about 11 months and now it is
not in good condition.
It is difficult to walk comfortably and there is a
noise when I walk.In order to complete my studies
without break I should have a new prosthetics
as soon as soon possible.
I have gone to about three prosthetics companies in
Staten Island. The first they ask is what kind of
insurance policy do you have?.As I told you it is
unthinkable to afford the cost of a new prosthetics(I
don't have a insurance policy)since they are very
expensive.
Please help me if you have any program to assist a
disabled student with acquiring a suitable
prosthetics.
your sincerely,
prasantha.
