In response to the latest viewpoint on BOC, which is pushing my limits as
far as this past election did, I feel the need to give an opinion; whether
you like it or not. When reading the post from Dawn (nothing personal,
just referencing), I am getting this feeling like individuals who have
dedicated their working lives to the O&P field need to find justification
in the BOC route of credentials. Why do we need an alternate? What is
wrong with just one standard by which all are measured in this small field.
Everyone knows what the requirements are if you wish to pursue ABC
credentials: work experience, undergraduate degree, post graduate studies,
residency hours, and board exams; prepare yourself ahead for it. Make
concessions before the fact. I can appreciate not wanting to spend money
on the schooling, I can appreciate not wanting to leave the family for
periods of time, but those are variables that may be a part of the standard
currently....it may take some...I don't know....sacrifice and dedication?
I do not accept BOC as an alternate route as it currently stands. Nor do I
believe that it is necessary to have 2 completely separate credentialling
processes to identify us. I do not accept it as justification for lack of
desire, resources, and sacrifice to be a clinician in this field. This
applies to BOC and the single discipline ABC clinicians who have sought out
the less required credential, because it was fast and easy. It's not a
question of competence, it's a question of your standards, upholding the
standards and being accountable for the process that constructs the
standard. Don't sell yourself and this field short of what it is striving
to become. Make decisions and be accountable for their outcomes...whatever
they may be.
