I have been seeing an eight-year-old boy, 60 lbs, 3'10, for right knee
disarticulation prosthetic fitting periodically since his amputation
surgery at age five. He is very athletic and strives to keep up with
his older siblings: hockey, lacrosse, karate, soccer, swimming, skiing,
you name it.
I am looking for assistance in identifying a pediatric prosthetic knee
suitable for the knee disarticulation level that is robust enough for
this young fellow and will allow him to sprint. At the present time he
is using a USMC P32000 small aluminum 4-bar knee with supplemental
anterior elastic webbing/dacron strap knee flexion limiter which he
adjusts for running or walking purposes. This is paired with a
Springlite foot. It works reasonably well but I feel that there is room
for improvement.
He had used the Seattle Limb System's SSK610 Child's Play knee, and this
gave him reasonable running ability, however it did not afford him
sufficient knee flexion for play and ended up cracking the distal
posterior aspect of his socket upon deep knee flexion. He has also tried
the Century XXII Model 1100 Small Wonder, but found it difficult to
reliably initiate knee flexion when running or walking.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Finally, this same young fellow is very keen to start snow boarding,
wearing his prosthesis. I am wondering if anyone has experience with
this type of situation and has suggestions regarding the selection of
componentry, modifications to the snow board, leading with the affected
or sound limb, and the like?
I would be happy to post any responses if you include your consent for
that purpose.
