Hi All
I thought that we could open a discussion regarding a JPO article. Somehow
we never have a discussion of these articles and other professionals take
these articles as facts.
JPO Volume 12, Number 2
Physiological Comparisons of Physically Active Persons with Transtibial
Amputation Using Static and Dynamic Prostheses Versus Persons with
Nonpathological Gait during Multiple Speed Walking
Conclusions states; Based on our empirical findings, foot type appears to
be of minor importance for lower-speed ambulation in physically active
persons with transtibial amputation. However, the Re-Flex VSP appears to the
prosthesis of choice for high-velocity walking.
Question one, when did a prosthetic foot become a prosthesis of choice?
This confusion runs though out this article pg 61 One could hypothesize
that prosthesis design may be an interactive factor, are we talking about
prosthetic socket design or prosthetic foot design? Pg 60 Previous research
has shown elevated energy cost, exercise intensity, and decreased gait
efficiency in people with transtibial amputation. Various prostheses have
been developed to aid individuals with transtibial amputations in enhancing
gait performance and minimizing energy cost. Are we talking about various
feet?
Question two, why was there was no discussion of the variables of socket
design and foot alignment?
Did the authors feel these items where minor or not important, and there was
no need to include these variables.
Question three, why do we just look at prosthetic patients in this narrow
window just regarding feet?
Opinion; it's my thought that it is much harder to evaluate socket design,
are socket design with liners helping amputees better than feet?
Well Nike has come out with a new shoe Shox, uses technology and materials
that is used to connect a car's body to its frame, Nike states it bouncier,
so would this take the place of the vertical pylon?
That's all for Now, John Russell
