Did anyone happen to catch coverage of the Olympics last night and see the
special GM feature on the swimmer from South Africa? Maybe I'm at a fragile
state (of stress) these days, but the story brought tears to my eyes. He
was in the slowest 100m freestyle heat, but the other 2 swimmers false
started. He had to swim all by himself. He had never been in a 50m pool
before, let alone swim a whole 100m race. As an athlete from a developing
nation, the International Olympic Committee often gives wild cards out to
athlete delegates to try to further the program in their countries. He
struggled through the whole race, and finished a full minute off the typical
qualifying time for the event. The crowd went wild though...like he was a
gold medalist. It was a truly beautiful moment in sports.
Building on this triumph of the human spirit, a catchy phrase we heard
quite a bit about 4 years ago in Atlanta, I'd like you to keep this in mind
when considering participating in the Fund's Give Wings to Dreams 5K
Run/Walk on October 8th. This is the Fund's opportunity to shine and
introduce the power of O&P rehabilitation to the general public. We've
already got teams together from Ohio Willow Wood, College Park, Becker
Orthopedic, to name a few. If you're not a runner, come walk the event.
There will be individuals with various disabilities participating. The
South African swimmer proved there is honor in all sport...at whatever
level.
For more details and to catch the early registration rate...act soon. It's
only $15 and all participants get a great full-color sweatshirt. It will be
a nice souvenir from a great event. The event starts at 8:00 a.m...so
you'll still have plenty of time to catch a flight back home to the
families.
