Hello,

Thanks to all who replied in a timely fashion. Following are the
replies....I had to split my letter due to a maximun number of lines
allowed by the listserver...

I know it is hard to find good adhesives for some of the plastics/foams
used
in shoes and the problem shoes I have encountered are tennis shoes. I
use a
similar method except I use cyanoacrylate ( super glue ) 1st. After
removing the sole and have a flat but rough surface to work with then
use a
tongue depressor to apply a thick layer of super glue to the surface.
Wear
a mask or be in a well ventilated area to do this because the fumes are
overwhelming. Once dry then use barge on top of this to add the
buildup.
The super glue will bond very well to most plastics/foams that other
glues
will not stick to. What happens is the super glue bonds to the material

in
question, then the barge will bond to the super glue. The super glue is

very rigid and will create many small cracks or crazing once the sole is

flexed. This does not seem to be a problem though because the barge is
still holding well. I have done this on many occasions and have had
very
good luck. I learned this trick from a shoe repair guru where I used to

work. Hope this helps.

Coat both surfaces with shoe goo and let it dry over night. Next day
recoat both surfaces and allow to dry. Works most all the time.
Sometimes it is helpful if prior to the first coat of glue wipe both
surfaces with thinner.

On occasion we have used a non-brittle epoxy such as smooth on available

from SPS.

Good luck

Derek, Barge makes a product I think is just called vinyl cement that
works on non rubber soles. Brush it on and let it dry then heat with a
heat
gun to activate it and stick the pieces together. Good luck, Bryan

Derek, I have used an adhesive supplied by a metropolitan leather/shoe
supplies firm in Melbourne (Aust) called 12D It smells to me like it
may
be an acetone solvent loss type of adhesive. It works well with most of
the
harder type of soling materials while a neoprene based adhesives I
routinely
use on rubber types. The 'Oil Resistant' soles could be either one of
these..any hints on brand of shoe?

Try SuperBond All Purpose Adhesive (item# 5C-7826-GL) available from
KnitRite 800 821 3094
Also, the thinner is Item# 5C-7827-GL.

We have found it superior to Barge.
