To all:
We have been working with a 61 yo male with a traumatic Rt. Transhumeral
amputation. This individual is healthy and strong in all other aspects;
motivated to learn and use functional body powered prosthesis. External
power is not being considered at this time. Residual limb is in excellent
condition; has been wearing a shrinker and volume is not an issue. Slightly
bulbous distal end with what appears on palpation to be some flaring from
what is left of the epicondyles. The axilla to distal end is 7 1/4 long as
opposed to 9 5/8' axilla to epicondyle on sound side. Test socket has
already been done with 1 ply sock fit and standard transhumeral trimlines
and will be redone if modifications are necessary .
For all those who have any experience with transhumeral prostheses, we are
open to suggestions or ideas for suspending the socket (and maybe a
different configuration than the standard trimlines) other than with the
usual dual action harness. A 555 hook and VO hand with a quick disconnect
wrist will be the terminal devices. We have thought about using a sleeve
with pin, but it seems there would not be enough clearance to have the elbow
match the sound side. Maybe a wetfit with valve?? Any comments will be
appreciated.
