Dear listserv,
Several weeks ago I requested advice about a client with a
transfemoral amputation who is considering this surgery. I did not
receive any replies, which made me wonder if I need to explain the
situation further. This 30 year old gentleman's body weight was at
approximately 400lbs and is now approaching 220lbs. This large
weight loss has left him with a very pendulous abdomen that hangs
down almost to his knees. He has successfully ambulated for
almost 3 years now using a two color Iceross with lanyard
suspension. This accommodates the residual limb changes,
however some pistoning occurs between the lanyard and
prosthesis. I have asked him and his plastic surgeon to consider
removing the excess skin as an option to allow easier donning of a
straight suction(no belts or silicone sleeves) socket.
Has anyone dealt with this type of surgery for someone with a
transfemoral amputation?
Thank you,
Al Ingersoll C.P.
