I had one case this past year where the doctor informed the patient that she
would never walk again after the amputation of her leg above the knee. In her
early 60's and a smoker too boot, her son wheeled her into the office for a
consultation. Her history indicated an active lifestyle of traveling. She even
had plans for seeing Greece 5 months in the future. I had her stand in the
parallel bars to evaluate her strength. I fit her with a simple temporary
adjustable socket, stance locking knee and single axis foot. Almost a year
later she has her flexible, suction socket, hydraulic knee and single axis foot
prosthesis. Assisted by a cane, she has a big smile on her face and curses the
doctor who told her she would never walk again. She still goes to the PT gym.
I say the doctors are not the best at determining whether a person can walk.
They certainly have information to offer, and so do PTs. But CPs know what it
takes to walk on a prosthesis. Sometimes will and determination of the patient
goes along way. If I could only convince her to stop smoking!
