<Email Address Redacted>
A summary will be posted to the list in about a week.
Randy McFarland, CPO
From Amanda:
Thank you so much for your help! I've already received some useful
information! Could you tell me more about total surface bearing sockets
and how does a minimum of pistoning aid the athlete? Great ideas about
acute care at competitions!
As far as the info I've received here it is in a nutshell:
Gary Bertelsen: urethane plus fluid/elastic interface helpful for
decreasing friction
Gary Bedard, CO, FAAOP: new teflon products to decrease friction
Joel Kempfer: referred me to Julie Hayes of Orthotic/Prosthetic Athletic
Fund
I plan to contact Mr. Bertelsen as he said he'd be happy to answer any other
specific questions I may have. If anyone else would like to share their
stories I'd love to hear from them. I'm very interested in all ages and all
sports. Are there sports that contraindicated? Preferred? Has anyone
experienced any other types of skin conditions other than blisters? What
types of problems might I encounter at an event such as the paralympics,
that would be important for me to know about?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help! It's been difficult finding
practical information on this topic. Much of what I've found deals with
complex biomechanical properties of various applications--not the most
helpful for an athletic trainer who wants to help the athlete without being
able to fit them for a new prosthesis. Thanks again!
