As an amputee and Civil War buff, I am searching for information on the
life of James Edward Hanger beyond what is available from Hanger Orthopedic
Group, Inc.

I know he was wounded at the Battle of Phillipi AKA the Phillipi Races, on
June 3, 1861. His leg was amputated by Union surgeon James Robison. He
then spent 90 days making his prosthesis out of barrel staves with a pocket
knife. Beyond that I only know that he was from Lexington, VA. The
Battle was a relatively small engagement with few casualties on either
side.

I would like to know what confederate unit he was with and any other
history about him. I believe him to be right leg AK. Are there any
descendants? Does the original leg still exist? Etc.

If anyone has any information or suggestions please e-mail me at
