Al,
I have heard many complaints about residencies, primarily that they are
expecting that the resident become a full-time employee, fully skilled
and responsible for a full clinic load rather than being a resident.
Our philosophy at the University of Michigan was voiced by our Clinical
Director, Mark Taylor, C.P.O., Residents have to understand that this
is their last year of education, not their first year of employment. I
think this same problem is significant with many residency sites as
well.
However, other than delaying paying back loans for school, this is the
first that I've heard of the residencies,per se, placing hardships on
the residents. Could you or any of the other list members please
elucidate on this.
