Dear OANDP-L'ers,

Your cries have not gone unheard. Many of you have spoken with me
personally or written to me to express your concerns with some of the recent
occurrences on the listserv. I have taken measures to correct a few of
those problems.

The first issue is the virus problem.

I have come up with a solution which still needs to be tested. I have set a
line size limitation on postings, which will prevent large postings from
passing through the list. Attached files are measured as lines of code, and
therefore should be left at the gate before getting through since the line
count will exceed the limit. If additional viruses get through, I will need
to lower the limit some more.

The setback with this solution is that large postings will be restricted as
well. This may require some compilation postings to be sent in two parts.
The trouble is worth the savings though. Most other attachments will be
restricted as well. If this becomes a problem, I will come up with another
solution for that next. Attached files should not be sent to all members of
the listserv anyway, and should be sent upon request only.

The second issue: Problem posters.

I have been getting a lot of e-mail regarding problem posters and postings.
In an effort to eliminate unnecessary dialogue on the system, individuals
who have been pointed out to me a number of times will be set on a private
moderation mode. These individuals are NOT being removed from the list
server, but their messages will have to pass through me prior to being
posted. I am not very happy about having to do this, but enough of you
have had as much as you can handle and this should not be a reason to lose
valuable participants.

Postings from identified individuals will not be censored, but rather
reviewed to make sure that they follow the rules of the list.

1. Postings that should have gone directly to an individual will not be
forwarded to the list.
2. Postings that contain personal flaming will not be forwarded to the
list
3. Postings with inappropriate content will not be forwarded to the list

Other suggestions will be considered.

I repeat that I am not going to filter individuals personal opinions or
views on subject matter. This moderation is strictly for the purpose of
maintaining an orderly forum. You must continue to use your delete key if
someone writes something that you disagree with. There are also filters
settings in most mail programs that allow you to filter messages before they
end up in your mail box. For additional information on that, see your
software documentation- (RTFM for all you computer nerds.)

I hope that these attempts at correcting the problems create a better
environment for everyone. Please let me know if you have additional
suggestions.

Also, a reminder that requests for me to manually unsubscribe people from
the list are taken care of on Mondays. If you contact me to be removed,
your request will be saved and addressed on the next Monday. As always,
requests can be expedited with cash incentives ;)

Have a great day, and I look forward to seeing/meeting many of you at the
upcoming Academy meeting in San Diego.
