Hi All
Well I was discussing AFOs with a patient, that the insurance company gave
the patient the runaround. When I told the patient about Competitive Bidding
by Medicare. He pulls out this pamphlet Medicare & YOU.
This was printed august 1998, and the # HCFA-02119, on the inside page it
has the Medicare Patients Rights.
I will list a few of them:
1. The right to protection from discrimination in marketing and enrollment
2. The right to information about all treatment options available to you
3. The right to appeal decisions to deny or limit payment for medical care
4. The right, if you have a complex or serious medical condition, to receive
a treatment plan that includes directs access to a specialist.
These all point to HMO's but doesn't Medicare have to follow these rules
also?
This directly affects Medicare enrollment benefits practices, so how is HCFA
protecting the Medicare patient's rights, without notification of all
Medicare enrollees.
Stroke is considered a serious medical condition, so does this limit direct
access to a specialist?
At the bottom the Medicare patients rights listing it gives an 800 number
for each state if the patient thinks that his rights has been violated. I
plan on giving all my patients the number
On another page More Medicare Benefits (you pay no deducible) these are
all new.
Yearly mammograms
Pap smears, including pelvic and breast examination
Diabetes glucose monitoring
Diabetes education
Colorectal cancer screening
Bone mass measurement
Flu and pneumococcal pneumonia shots
The theme here is preventive, so doesn't AFOs preventive falls? The new
major concern for the health industry is the cost of falls, which means
quite of few studies on the prevention of falls, but who ever does the
studies always has the solution. This is like a self-promoting thing, but
does O&P have any studies that say that AFOs prevent falls?
Just a little food for thought
