A while back, I posted an inquiry to the list regarding a patient that our
practice received as a transfer patient. The patient is a 9 year old arm
amputee. He is a congenital amputee and has been using the UCLA CAPP terminal
since he was first fitted with a prosthesis.
No one in our practice has ever prescribed the UCLA CAPP terminal or have any
experience with it. Since we began seeing this patient more than 6 months ago
it is quite evident that he is outgrowing the CAPP. We have spoken to both
the parents and the patient and both parties are satisfied with the
prosthesis. Sooner or later the patient will have to change. I did some
research in back issues of the O and P journals and there are some articles I
read regarding an adult size UCLA CAPP. However I have made inquiries
regarding this and no one can provide me with any information regarding the
adult version of the UCLA CAPP. Can anyone on this list enlighten me on this.
The patient does not want to make a change and should I just allow the
patient to continue using the UCLA CAPP until the patient himself realizes
that he needs to make a change? Also, the parents have told us that it would
be too difficult for their son to adjust to another terminal, so in a sense,
we are also fitting the parents.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
