A project is being planned for Izmit, Turkey, the site of the deadly
earthquake which took the lives of over 15,000 people and maimed many
others. Some funding is being provided to service the injured by providing
prosthetic and/or orthotic devices for them. I would like some information
from those who have had experience meeting the prosthetic needs of people
who have had amputations performed secondary to trauma. I am thinking
specifically of a comparison between the conventional soft liner and hard
socket PTB type and the silicone systems. Some factors to keep in mind when
responding are:
1. Funding is not unlimited. We want to service as many as possible but
also provide Western standard prosthetics. In the future if there is a need
for repairs or adjustments, we want the people to be able to go to nearby
Istanbul for services from P&O providers.
2. Some P&O manufacturers are in country i.e. Otto Bock, Teh Lin, and some
Turkish groups producing their own componentry so the Silicon systems would
need to be brought in from outside, which we can do.
3. This should be thought of as having the P&O professional on site for a
limited time, to do fitting, adjustments, gait training etc. after which
they will be on their own.
Thank you in advance for your input.
