The ABC board of directors has released the following announcement:

ABC Announces its Future Office Location Plans

The American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. (ABC) has announced its plan to relocate its offices to new quarters, no later than May 15, 2001. As the principal credentialing body for orthotic and prosthetic practitioners and their facilities, the ABC has previously shared offices with the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) and the American Academy of Orthotics and Prosthetics (Academy). On October 4, 1999, however, it was decided by the respective organizations to manage their programs independently of their cooperative administrative agreement. Based on this decision, the ABC believes that relocation will enhance its ability to strengthen its programs to ensure that patients receive care from those who meet rigorous standards of O&P quality patient care.

William D. Beiswenger, CPO, FAAOP, ABC president, noted that this decision is intended to support the ABC's initiatives to improve the administration of its primary operations. We believe that the ABC's accomplishments over the last five years to refine its credentialing and accreditation programs will be strengthened by establishing our individual operational identity. In addition, independence from a shared housing relationship will allow us to concentrate our financial and management resources on further ABC improvements.

William Barringer, CO, incoming ABC president, noted that ABC's commitment to collaborative relationships with the AOPA and the Academy would be sustained. We will continue to stress the importance of our relationship with AOPA and the Academy. This collegial affiliation has strengthened our ability to develop and implement policies and programs that benefit the consumer and promote competency of practitioners and the ability of O&P facilities to meet the needs of patients. Our past emphasis on communication concerning major issues and ABC policies will be a cornerstone of our ongoing relationship with the profession's membership organizations.

Established in 1948, the ABC establishes standards of excellence, and quality of care for allied health practitioners and facilities that provide orthotic and prosthetic care. More than 4,000 practitioners are certified by ABC and more than 1,100 facilities have achieved accreditation.
