It appears that the problems in the USA are problems shared in India.

I am interested in contacting progressive prosthetists in other countries to
exchange information on a variety of topics.

This reply is forwarded with the authors permission. To others, whose
comments I have forwarded without permission, I am truly sorry. I will
certainly ask in the future. Mark Benveniste CP

Dear sir,
I very much match your wavelength. I keep telling to my colleagues in India
that we are not focussing in making our academic base strong.

My contention has always been that we should be competent enough to make
clinical decisions ourselves, which sadly we are not. This requires strong
academic foundation and lot of clinical discussions. Sadly many of us are not
in a position to physiologically explain and prove the efficacy of an
orthosis at all times, the importance and the prognosis of using an orthosis.

We may excel commercially but we are losing ground academically. As you have
written we need to concentrate in improving our scientific clinical and
engineering base.

Sadly much research work is being done for us by other
professionals. There are some physicians that still maintain that untrained
artisans are much better for work than qualified P&O's. This is a shame for
us but we need to prove them wrong by our work and skill.

I always think that more revenue should be spent on making educative
conferences than luxurious ones.

I really do not know when we will arrive at a position where we require the
physician to just give the referral with the biomechanical need. And then we
arrive at the diagnosis, verify it, choose the components with regard to
materials, strength, and effectively defend
ourselves with the physiology involved in the appliance.

I have been trying to use the biomechanical analysis form given in the Atlas
of Orthotics. I request you and others share your experiences using the
form. Though we have advanced technologically with more options for
components, and more
methods of measuring and fabrication, we are still in the physicians or
therapists shadow. We depend on them for prescriptions and approval of our
products.

When will it change and WHEN WILL WE EFFECT THE CHANGE?

Please reply,

Srivatsa
