Mark I believe you are correct in your assessment. It is my opinion that most
prosthetic knees are designed to fit the broadest spectrum of clients. In the
not to distant past the Otto Bock 3P23 (exoskeleton) and Otto Bock 3R15
(endoskeleton) were the most prescribed knee joints in the county. At one
amputee clinic I attended ALL new above knee amputees were prescribed
routinely the 3P23 knee joint and a single axis foot.
What is needed is prescription criteria for today’s many knee joints based
upon a database of client profiles, successful outcomes, and other data. This
prescription criteria then must be is easily accessible to clinicians
worldwide. This concept is not new as it was the collective opinion of
researchers, physicians, prosthetists, therapists, engineers, and others
attending an R&D meeting sponsored by the VA in San Francisco around 1989-90.
A report of that meeting was published in the O&P Almanac. At one time the VA
did have a publication on knee prescription criteria.
