Dear Listservers:

Yesterday I was asked to evaluate a 23y/o bilateral hip disarticulation
patient.
At first hearing of the case I felt that a custom prosthetic socket/LSO was
about the best we can do for him. However, after evaluating his strength
and determining his motivation, a colleague and I believe he can
successfully ambulate utilizing lofstrand crutches to achieve a swing thru
gait. I'm looking for some ideas. Has anyone had successful fittings and
ambulation with such a case?

I'm thinking along the lines of a recipricating gait orthosis mechanism to
utilize the patient's trunk motion. Ideally the RGO mechanism would be
removable and the design would allow the patient the option to swing thru if
desired. Possible??

The patient can activate muscles at the amputation site. Has anyone ever
utilized myoelectric designs on lower extremity? What is preventing
us--componentry, weight, safety?

Any ideas on socket design, materials, and componentry? I
would greatly appreciate any input?
