LAMPANG, Thailand (AP) - A team of Thai veterinarians and surgeons operated
today to save the leg of an elephant that stepped on a land mine, despite
fears the animal's health had been weakened by heavy doses of painkillers and
other drugs.
The three-hour operation to remove part of the animal's leg seemed to be a
success, though it was too early to say for sure, physicians said.
Veterinarians hope eventually to fit the animal with a prosthesis when the
wound has healed.
