POV Editorial
Welcome to the July 1999 issue of Amputation Online Magazine.
Trying to write an editorial after returning back from the ACA
Conference in Reno is very difficult. All I want to do is write about
my three days in Nevada - its as if I can't write enough about it. My
best conclusion is there is nothing like it on the planet - 500
people with one thing in common, 99 per cent of whom are going in the
same direction - onward and upward!
This edition of Amputation Online magazine is dedicated to everyone
at the ACA Conference, from Mary Novotny and her staff and
volunteers, Georgie Maxfield's crew in Reno and even the little
scouts who helped out with security!
A special thanks to Chris Hughes who did such a great job on the SJU
Amputee Mailing list BBQ, I sadly missed the event - something to
kick myself for until next year. To Ralph Fowler and George Valasquez
who picked me up from the airport. Roberta Bert Melvin who I met in
SF and travelled to Reno with - I walked from the North terminal to
the South terminal and back to meet her plane. A special thanks to
Betsy Mannhiem and Monet Perry for just being who they are.
A special thanks to all the list members who made it to Reno. Now you
know why the ACA Conference is such a special event - totally unique
on this planet of ours.
Thanks must go to Karen at Flex Foot for sponsoring the list t shirts
- if you are a list member you can get a shirt by sending $5US to:
GB Communications

I picked up a few interesting products whilst in Reno. One is the
book based on the life of George Valasquez, co-written by India
Podsen. The other is a work out video by Bonnie St John Deane, both
these fine products are available for sale at the Amputee Mall.
We are already saving for next year - I fully recommend that you do
also. Orlando here we come!

BUSINESS NEWS
Foot Wars
Episode One - The Phantom G Foot
Flex Foot Fends Off Copyright Challenge From Long Term Rivals Springlite
If you have ever noticed a visual similarity between Flex Foot and
Springlite prosthetic limb products, well there is a reason for that.
A long time ago in a state not so far, far away a fledgling company
called Flex Foot brought forth a radical new design in prosthetic
foot making. However, the Flex Foot planet was not a happy planet and
soon a rebel force departed, only to take up residence in a nearby
system called Utah.
Many years passed as both systems became rivals and developed a
mutual distain for each other, the inevitable war took place - legal
action ensued. With both planets firmly entrenched in their belief
systems and manufacturing processes, the two great forces met earlier
this month at the U.S. District Court for the Central Division of
California.
Citing the force known throughout the galaxy as patent infringement
Flex Foot President Maynard Carkhuff stated Flex-Foot has invested
heavily in bringing new and innovative technology to the marketplace.
Carkhuff went on to say, As part of that investment, Flex-Foot has
built a strong worldwide patent portfolio to protect its proprietary
technology. Flex-Foot has consistently and vigorously enforced its
intellectual property rights, and will continue to do so.
With the first episode of Foot Wars now complete, insiders believe a
second episode is already in production.
Since Springlite's penalty for copyright infringement includes a long
session of carbon freezing at least until beginning of the next
episode, peace once again prevails throughout the known universe.
Amputees every were can buy $2.75 souvenirs from Pizza Hut, Taco Bell
and KFC or your local prosthetist.
The Official Version
Flex-Foot, Inc. has recently prevailed in a patent infringement
lawsuit against CRP, Inc., d/b/a Springlite. As a consequence,
Springlite is required to immediately discontinue all manufacture and
sale of its lower limb prosthesis known as the G-foot.
On January 8, 1999, an arbitration panel of the American Arbitration
Association unanimously concluded that Springlite's G-foot product
literally infringed two claims of Flex-Foot's U.S. Patent No.
4,822,363 for its invention entitled Modular Composite Prosthetic
Foot and Leg. On Friday, June 11, 1999, the U.S. District Court for
the Central Division of California confirmed the arbitration panel's
finding of literal infringement and permanently enjoined Springlite
from all further manufacture and sale of the G-foot device.
In discussing the significance of this case, Maynard Carkhuff,
President of Flex-Foot, commented, Flex-Foot has invested heavily in
bringing new and innovative technology to the marketplace. As part of
that investment, Flex-Foot has built a strong worldwide patent
portfolio to protect its proprietary technology. Flex-Foot has
consistently and vigorously enforced its intellectual property
rights, and will continue to do so.
Flex-Foot, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets Advanced
Technology prosthetic systems for lower limb amputees.
