I provided a trans metatarsal prosthesis to a 21 year old male about 3
years ago. The prosthesis was fabricated at PRS in Florida. I used a
springlight toe plate and Cirrus foot shell (to match the foot of the
opposite trans femoral side). His amputations were the result of being
run over by a F-16 jet on an aircraft carrier (T. Roosevelt). The
emergency surgery on his residual limbs was not the best but was
adequate. He had problems with the scar opening over the distal end of
the residual 5th metatarsal. He was too active and impatient to allow
enough time for it to heal properly. The silipos partial foot socks
helped a great deal until he could have revision surgery to prevent
further skin breakdown. He continued to wear the socks and said they
helped a lot. One negative issue is these socks do not last very long and
require frequent replacement. Good hygiene is critical.
