Here at the Rancho Los Amigos Rehab Engineering Program we have had a
chance to try various Camp Toe-Off AFOs. It seems more appropriate to a
mild drop foot patient rather than someone needing the support usually
found in an anterior shell AFO, as it is quite flexible.
We had good success in fitting one on a patient who had worn out a co-poly
AFO with a very low trim (9 from bottom of foot). We made a similar trim
on the Toe-Off and he did well with it. We have also molded plastizote
based foot inserts to increase medial/lateral control of the foot for a
couple equinovarus patients. On another subject with drop foot, the
anterior portion of the Toe-Off was a poor fit to the prominent tibial
prominence and this became VERY uncomfortable to wear; skin breakdown
resulted.
All in all, its an interesting design but the off-the-shelf concept makes
fitting a challenge. Also, no post-forming is possible of course, as its a
thermoset. Our experienced is mixed.
