Tony Barr's point about pre-surgical consultation b/w all of the players is
an excellent one. In many parts of Australia, this already happens but
probably only because of the preparedness, at an individual level, of the
professionals involved, to be open minded. That is to say, it is not a
recognised, statutory part of the protocol; it happens because the surgeons
involved are prepared to acknowledge their lack of specific knowledge and
then ask the 'experts' (which obviously includes the patient).
After 23 years it happens regularly in this area.
