Hello everybody,
I have a patient who has a left flail arm. She had been quite unhappy
with previous attempts to brace the arm, and wanted to see if we could
make something lighter and less obtrusive.
I came up with a cuff attached around the proximal aspect of the forearm
with three straps connecting to a transradial-style figure-8 harness....
the anterior suspensory strap's y bifurcations connect to the front of
the cuff, and the control strap connects to the posterior aspect of
the cuff. This way, she can actually adjust the position of her arm
slightly with scapular abduction and gleno-humeral flexion. She's
really happy with it and wears it all day.
This, however, does not solve the situation with her wrist and hand.
She would like something along the lines of a prosthetic glove with
something in it to stiffen it (perhaps a flexible corset stay). She has
a side job singing in a jazz club and so cosmesis is a prime concern. A
cock-up splint helps with the wrist, but is too obvious for her and
doesn't keep her fingers hidden or protected from flapping around.
Can anybody recommend a cosmetic glove that would actually be big enough
for her to fit her whole hand in? Or would the flail fingers make
donning such a glove impossible? That's the conclusion I'm leaning
towards.... has anybody dealt with a situation like this?
Guide me, my colleagues! :)
