I have heard of several instances of brachial plexus palsies, and knew a
prosthetist who was also an AE amputee and suffered from brachial plexus
problems on his sound side from his harness. Since that time I have used and
promoted the use of shoulder saddle and cross chest harnesses to leave the
sound side axilla free. One of the best designers of these harnesses is John
Billock,CPO, who probably has seen a number of brachial pexus problems since
he specializes in upper limbs. He is in Warren, Ohio. I feel that the wide
use of figure 8 harnesses, combined with the fact that most prosthetists do
not understand the principles of harnessing and make them too inefficient and
tight, leads to high rejection levels of these prostheses. Mike Quigley,CPO
