Hand and Glove Responses
Text:
In a message dated 4/21/99 4:36:59 PM Central Daylight Time, I asked:
I have a BE patient on a budget. I got him a simple Hosmer hand with a glove
of an Otto Bock color he selected. He is happy except that the prosthetic
hand is much narrower than his hand and the glove looks so fake. I can't
disagree with him on this. What can he do without spending thousands? Any
tricks out there? Can I glue a material such as, for instance, cloud crepe,
to the side of the hand to widen it?
Is there some home remedy to put freckle and hair type splotches on the
exterior of the glove?
Here are the RESPONSES:

Not sure if you are using and Otto Bock glove or not. But you could build up
the hand then expand the Otto Bock glove with heat then shrink it down
around the hand.
The way folks do hair on hands is to shave some off the sound side then
insert into the glove with a needle. Might even want to try super glue with a
pair of needle nose forceps. Companies like Otto Bock and Realistic at one
time had tinting kits that would work for the freckles.

Dave--
you will have to become a bit of an artist...
Realastic sells a very nice colorant kit you can get to touch up dead looking
cosmetic gloves. For the most part, stock gloves need livened up in the pink
and red ranges. Realastic's colors stain the glove, but do so slowly so you
just about can't make a mistake that isn't fixable. Otto bock also sells a
colorant kit (besides their little coloring pens) but the stain in their kit
is much too agressive and quick for my use. Too many mistakes can happen and
are not fixable.
As far as enlarging th ehand, sure, why not add a bit of material inside.
You can warm up the glove so the new girth stretches it out.
Here's a helpful trick if you haven't used it before... get some pure
silicone spray (mold release or parting agent...not the cooking kind that has
oils in it too). Before donning the glove, spray silicone the inner hand
shell and the insde of the glove thouroghly. The glove will then almost don
itself! (it saves a lot of swearing!)

David,
Otto Bock has a couple of pens, one red and one blue, that
can be used to color the glove. They are used for painting veins
(blue) and the typical redness that we have on our knuckles. This
allows the glove to look a small bit more lifelike. Hope this helps.

I know that Jim at Hosmer had a real dence almost styrofoam type of foam that
he used for an inexpensive passive type BE. He hollowed out the foam and
glued the socket into the hollowed out end. and cut to length, then I belive
he glued some type of cheap wrist unit to accept the hand. Maybe then you
could shape, and pull on a springlite shrinktube. Then you can paint the
shrinktube with OWW masters touch spray tints. And I have been taking single
strands of carbon fiber and sprinkling it onto the wet tint(this lets it
stick) to make simulated hair. think it looks better than Ronnie Graves
spider webbing hair effect.
Hope it helps.

What size hand do you have/what size does he meas.....also glove fitting is a
problem if you build up on the hand......you may try Realastic for a larger
glove if you build it up.

You can glue foam to the hand, the best thing to do is use staybond glue from
cascade and make sure to get a good tracing of the hand so you can place the
extra pads in the right spots.

Hi, my name is Wayne and I'm a BKA here in Florida. Have you tried
contacting Ronnie Graves at Prosthetic Research Specialists (PRS). They are
located in Bushnell, Florida and they developed the covering for my
prosthesis. I believe that it is called the Second Skin and I have seen
them with both freckles and hair painted on them and they look very real. I
don't have their phone number here right now but I'm sure they can be located
by telephone information. Ronnie is an amputee also and may be able to help.
I know that his prices are quite a bit lower than what the hospitols charge
the insurance companies. Good luck.

HI DAVID,
TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION,YES YOU CAN BUILD UP THE PASSIVE HAND
WITHPELITE,CREPE,PLASTAZOTE,ETC.
JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN'T SEE THE COLOR OF THE MATERIAL THROUGH THE
GLOVE.OTTO BOCK AND REALASTIC SELL DYING OIL FOR GLOVES TO ENHANCE KNUCKLE
AND VIENS. YOU'LL HAVE TO BE INVENTIVE FOR FRECKLES.TRY TO STAY ALITTLE
SMALLER THAN THE CONTRALATERAL SIDE IN SIZE THOUGH. THE PROSTHETIC HAND
ISN'T ANAMATED AT ALL AND WILL ACTUALLY SEEM LARGER EVEN IF THE MEASUREMENT
ARE THE SAME AS THE SOUND HAND. GOOD LUCK JIM SKARDOUTOS
Thank you, all, for the responses.
