Having just returned from Belize Central America on a joint venture amputee assistance effort with the LEAP Foundation, I would like to report that the trip was quite interesting and very successfull. The prosthetic team evaluated some 20 amputees and successfully fitted several. A follow up return trip is planned for August.Californian prosthetestists John Zeffer,C.P. and Bob Doran,C.P. donated their services for the Barr Foundation.Rob Kistenberg,C.P was the prosthetic director of the Leap Foundation and Robbie Jackson is the Leap Foundation's Project Director.Certified prosthetists are being enlisted for the August return trip. Please contact me if you have an interest.
.
Donated prosthetic components were supplied by Ohio Willow Wood , Kingsley Manufacturing Company,San Francisco Prosthetics and Orthotics,Silipos,WBC Industries and other components from private practitioners, thru the Barr Foundation.
(See our Hope Donor Club Membership and sponsoring prosthetist list on www.oandp.com/barr)
The Rotary Club of Belize was also instrumental in the coordination of the two Foundation's work and provided the living accomadations and terrific hospitality! As featured in November 1998 O&P Business News, the Barr Foundation's goal is aligning our organization with other established humanatarian efforts to assist amputees domestically and those of third world countries.
We are also organizing a similar effort for Bosnia amputees with the Heather Mills Foundation. We expect to soon solicit prosthetic components to assist her in her program there once the infrastructure has been determined practical.
Heather Mills,is a b/k amputee and high fashion model who was recently featured in People Magazine.
We will also be interested in meeting with the POF( Prosthetics Outreach Foundation) and Physicians Against Landmines to determine if we maybe helpfull in their work.We ultimately want to establish the Barr Foundation as a reputable and established domestic and international humanatarian amputee assistance organization that all manufacturers and practitioners of O&P can comfortably work with in providing donations of goods and services. Domestic and international humanatarian assistance organizations are welcome to contact us for more information.Without the generosity of O&P manufacturers and practitioners, accomplishing these goals would not be possible.
Over 250 amputees ,both foriegn and domestic, have been successfuly prosthetically rehabilitated, who otherwise would not have been, thanks to their participation. (Testimonials are available on our web site www.oandp.com/barr)
We would also like to thank the United Amputee Services Association (UASA) based in Orlando Florida,as our administration partner in this worthwhile mission.
