In 1991 I co-authored The Changing Role of the Amputee in the Rehabilitation
Process in the article are the words......The survival of the professional
providers of prosthetic services depends on the amputees we serve. But they
must they apply the rule -Caveat Emptor- Let the buyer beware.

Al Pike, CP

Let the buyer beware--but at the very least, provide education to buyers and third party payers that the O&P industry/profession is presently unregulated in most states and at the federal government level.
Consumers (buyers) will be subject to the only unlicensed heath care profession that exists in this country today.
The industry of O&P does not mandate, by law, ANY minimal educational standards for practitioners or DME suppliers of prosthetic and orthotic goods and services. Even cerification is optional in most states.

This currently unregulated industry, often results in less than quality treatment and encourages fraud and abuse.
The system continues to discourage proper $ coverages by private and government reimbursers for high levels of prosthetic and orthotic technology and services that are available today.
