Advertising in a professional publication is distasteful to me as a
clinician. As a realist I see the need for commercial funds to help
support/defray our expenses. Intrinsic in our acceptance of the ad
however is our endorsement of the product and frankly I was never asked
to endorse any products for inclusion in ad copy. Perhaps a reasonable
solution would be to include a removable supplement, or a page listing
the contributors with equal space and layout design for all who
contributed. This would remove the commercial and competitive element
from the ads, and preserve the revenue from our sponsors. This would
also give the smaller companies an equal chance to support the
publication w/o discrimination. I would even suggest a set dollar
amount for the contribution. In this way, practitioners who wanted to
contribute could also do so and have their name mentioned on the
contribution page of the journal. We should also set up strict
guidelines for whom we allow to contribute or we may be opening
ourselves up for discrimination litigation based on our refusal to
include some contributors, should that occur.
